Mater Misericordiae Hospital is committed to be a leading healthcare provider in East and Central Africa and to benchmark itself against the highest attainable world standards, seeking continuous improvement.

Today The Mater Hospital is a 145 bed tertiary care institution providing a wide range of services, in all the subspecialties, for mothers and children as well as the general public. Work is underway to add a further 30 beds before the end of 2012. There is a 9 bed Intensive Care Unit and a 10 bed special care baby unit for the critically ill. There are 5 operating theatres plus a day care theatre. We also offer kidney dialysis.

The Hospital has a 24 hour Accident and Emergency (A & E) service and an ambulance facility. Patients are admitted through this unit or directly from the Consultant clinics, and they are also followed up post discharge through these same clinics. Over 500 outpatients pass through the hospital clinics daily and another 300 through our satellite clinics in Development House, Buruburu Shopping Center, Thika Town and Embakasi. Our xray, laboratory and physiotherapy units are well equipped and recently our A&E department and the paramedical areas went paperless with all records online.

Recent upgrades in X-Ray ensure first class imaging in CT scanning, ultrasound, mammography, general radiography and screening procedures. We have recently acquired a new cardiac catheterization laboratory which has greatly enhanced our ability to offer minimally invasive heart surgery to our clients. We have also enhanced services at the Orthopedic Center by upgrading the quality of images through an image intensifier.

The Mater Hospital is a leader in East Africa in the area of pediatric cardiac care. As well as an active outreach awareness and preventive program it offers diagnostic and therapeutic care for all forms of heart ailments. Approximately 200 children are treated annually for congenital and rheumatic heart disease. The children’s cardiac program is offered on a charity basis with the help of well-wishers, donors and local fundraising. More could be done if funding were available. We are doing an increasing amount of adult cardiac work that includes both surgery and interventional catheterization.
